My Bedtime Routine with Sophie

Baby Sophie is 4 months old now. As we know newborns sleep a lot, but not very long so its like what we called ‘nap’. Sophie’s sleep pattern is pretty normal but most of the days she can’t sleep through the night. I guess that’s normal also because she might get hungry, needs a diaper change or what not.

WhatsApp Image 2016-08-18 at 11.54.23A lot of new mummies ask me how to train their babies to sleep through the night but I wasn’t really able to give an answer. Partly because baby sleep schedule can change time to time and it is all about adjustment. I guess all moms just get used to it.

As for baby Sophie, sometimes if she gets really tired she sleeps through the night, for example playing with her daddy or Jacob. She gets really happy and excited and then she just sort of pass out at night haha. But sometimes, she will keep waking up at night, can be as bad as every hour 🙁

Today I want to share with you guys some of the tips I have been practising on Sophie. For new mummies out there this might be helpful for you! First of all, for every newborn, it is important to introduce day and night time to them. How? When your baby sleeps during the day, keep the lights on and keep sounds at normal level. It’s okay to have some noise as long as it doesn’t wake baby up in fear. (Avoid super loud and sharp noises) Jacob will be at his most active state during day time so Sophie learned the pattern too. At night, turn off the light or use a night-light. When feeding or diaper change, do it as quietly and calmly as possible. Soon your baby will be able to sleep longest during night, even better if no midnight feed! Now for mummies, your patience will definitely be tested. Nightime routine is not easy as it gets really really exhausting. What I usually do is to have naps during the day together with baby. It really helps! Try two short naps during the day! Sometimes we just want to get things done during baby’s nap but taking short naps can help you cope better in your daily routine. 🙂

Now, as easy as it sounds, sometimes Sophie still can’t sleep well at night! 🙁 Name all the traditional Chinese methods, I’ve tried it to help Sophie to sleep longer. Haha. Last couple of weeks I received this care package from JOHNSON’S®. They sent me their Bedtime range to try so I did. But before that I did some research online of course. Let’s get into the steps and I will review my opinions after!

JOHNSON’S® BEDTIME® range includes JOHNSON’S® BEDTIME® baby bath, JOHNSON’S® BEDTIME® baby lotion, JOHNSON’S® BEDTIME® baby powder and JOHNSON’S® BEDTIME® baby oil. All the BEDTIME® products are proven mild and gentle. Using these products as part of JONHSON’S® clinically proven 3-Step Routine, incorporating bath time and massage, can help engage your baby’s senses while strengthening your bond and giving both baby and parents a better night’s rest!

This is a MUST to prepare baby to sleep. I practise it on Jacob too, from baby until now. But little did I know, the bath product used on baby matters. (omg!) I mean, by introducing a familiar scent body wash can help calming baby and baby actually recognise it’s bedtime!

Oh, did you know bathtime is Sophie’s favourite? Haha she loves to bathe, gets very excited everytime. I didn’t use the whole bottle as shown in photo of course. Sometimes I will let the bottle opened like so to let Sophie know it’s a bedtime bath. The fragrance of the wash is very very soothing, even for me!

Research has shown that routine touch and massage improves sleep quality and quantity when part of a bedtime routine. This is the best bonding time with your baby!

After a warm bath followed by a soothing massage, it’s time for baby to enjoy some quiet time and go to dreamland. Make sure you are close to your baby to calm him, keeping him relaxed for bed.

image7I tried this bedtime range for 7 days straight. Sophie really sleeps well at night now. It surprised me too! After this night routine (usually done by evening, because babies can’t shower too late right), she will just stay calmly in her cot and falls asleep around 8PM. By 11PM she will wake up for milk, back to sleep right after and next feed will be in the morning! Say whaaaaaaat!? Before this she usually wakes up for one midnight feed but now not anymore! Most importantly, she wakes up next day super cheerful!

I do want to stress on the NATURALCALM® essences that come in this product range. It is a special blend of gentle and calming aromas that has help improved Sophie’s sleep. Jacob uses this range too! Other than lotion, I use the baby oil alternately together with the baby powder. (But Jacob use more on the powder haha)
